How to Get Your Electrical License in Idaho

Steps to Start:

  1. Get Your Apprentice License:

    • Fill out the Electrical Apprentice Application Form.

    • Submit the form and payment to the state.

    • Enroll in a board-approved apprenticeship program and maintain your license.

    • Be employed to count OJT hours.

  2. Employment and Education:

    • Apply for an apprentice card or find employment first and then get your apprentice card.

    • To enroll in school, employment is required, and your job will sponsor your education.

  3. Journeyman Test:

    • Takes generally 4-5 years to be eligible for the test.

    • Requires 576 classroom hours (144 hours per year Certificate of Completion from an Idaho Apprenticeship School).

    • Requires 8000 OJT hours.

Additional Information:

  • To claim more than 2000 OJT hours per year, you must provide a paycheck stub and proof of work.

  • An alternative route (not advised) is to skip school and complete 16,000 OJT hours.

  • After acquiring your journeyman license, there is a 4-year waiting period before applying for a master's license.
