Steps to Start:
Get Your Apprentice License:
Fill out the Electrical Apprentice Application Form.
Submit the form and payment to the state.
Enroll in a board-approved apprenticeship program and maintain your license.
Be employed to count OJT hours.
Employment and Education:
Apply for an apprentice card or find employment first and then get your apprentice card.
To enroll in school, employment is required, and your job will sponsor your education.
Journeyman Test:
Takes generally 4-5 years to be eligible for the test.
Requires 576 classroom hours (144 hours per year Certificate of Completion from an Idaho Apprenticeship School).
Requires 8000 OJT hours.
Additional Information:
To claim more than 2000 OJT hours per year, you must provide a paycheck stub and proof of work.
An alternative route (not advised) is to skip school and complete 16,000 OJT hours.
After acquiring your journeyman license, there is a 4-year waiting period before applying for a master's license.
